I am constantly reminded of the shelling of Fort Sumter, April 12, 1861. Three months before that, the Buchanan administration sent a merchant ship to Charleston to bring provisions to the fort. The ship, Star of the West, was fired on by secessionist shore batteries and was unable to reach the fort.

That’s as treasonous as when colonial rebels fired on the King’s loyal troops 90 years earlier. Brits have noted the inconsistency when secession is celebrated on July 4th.
