HISTORY
On March 22, 1980, the monument was unveiled before approximately 100 to 400 people.
A man using the pseudonym Robert C. Christian commissioned the Guidestones. The Guidestones functioned as a compass, calendar, and clock. Christian also purchased the 5-acre (2-hectare) site.
In 2015, the documentary film Dark Clouds Over Elberton claimed that the Guidestones were paid for by Herbert Hinzie Kersten (1920 – 2005), a doctor from Iowa, described as a white supremacist and supporter of David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan. Kersten was a friend of Robert Merryman, who published Common Sense Renewed in 1986, a book which aimed to explain the Guidestones. Kersten was also an associate of William Shockley, a Nobel laureate in physics who was also a white supremacist and eugenicist. The documentary makers claimed to have acquired a letter from Wyatt C. Martin of the Granite City Bank and found Kersten’s address as the return address.
On July 6, 2022, a little after 4:00 am, an explosion destroyed the Swahili/Hindi slab and caused significant damage to the capstone. The remaining slabs were later removed by a construction crew due to safety concerns.”
