The studies done by many radiometric methods are to date the sample, remove any discongruent material, then test again until a satisfactory datum is determined. The fossil trail concerning the feud on KNM-ER 1470 was probably the most reproted.

Both Leakey and Johanson kept adjusting the samples until they got the date ranges they wanted, discarding and not reporting those dates which did not fit their preconceived idea about the actual dates. Having the oldest dates were awarded with book deals, grants, and notoriety. Nobody remembers the oldest pig tooth found but everyone buys books about the oldest hominid fossil.
