“...Highway Strips...”
**********************************************
This is a good article to read:

An Excerpt:
“Congress passed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 creating federal funds for interstate highway construction. As the IHS developed so did its ability to support national defense. For example, throughout the system, mile-long stretches of concrete pavement double as emergency landing strips for military aircraft.”

I believe it’s one out of every three miles must straight as a pin. Sometimes they double them up.

***mile-long stretches of concrete pavement double as emergency landing strips for military aircraft***
The Interstate Highway System, while fully open to civilian use, was designed to military specifications; for example, to transport rockets and other strategic equipment. Thus you will note bridge overpasses must exceed 13 feet; curves are long and gentle; grades cannot be too steep; adequate shoulders are provided. Much more about construction specs, weight limits, water shed, etc.
