One person died after an estimated 11-foot alligator pulled them into a retention pond Friday at the Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club near Burgess, officials said.

Horry County Police spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov confirmed that HCPD's Environmental Services and Criminal Investigations divisions are investigating the death.

Moskov said Horry County Fire Rescue responded around 11:45 a.m. to the area of Excalaber Court, and "upon arrival, units determined that an alligator had taken hold of a neighbor and retreated into a nearby retention pond."

The victim was recovered from the pond, Moskov said. She added that a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources biologist and SCDNR-contracted alligator removal service determined that the 11-foot alligator should be euthanized.

The Pope took a couple of days off to visit the rugged mountains of Alaska for some sightseeing. He was cruising along the campground in the PopeMobile when there was a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods.

A helpless Democrat, wearing sandals, shorts, a ‘Save the Whales’ hat and a ‘To Hell with Trump’ T-shirt, was screaming while struggling frantically and thrashing around trying to free himself from the grasp of a 10-foot grizzly.

As the Pope watched in horror, a group of Republican loggers came racing up. One quickly fired a 44 magnum into the bear’s chest. The other two reached up and pulled the bleeding, semiconscious Democrat from the bear’s grasp. Then using long clubs, the three loggers finished off the bear and two of them threw it onto the bed of their truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Democrat in the back seat.

As they prepared to leave, the Pope summoned them to come over. ‘I give you my blessing for your brave actions!’ he told them. ‘I heard there was a bitter hatred between Republican loggers and Democratic environmental activists but now I’ve seen with my own eyes that this is not true.’

As the Pope drove off, one logger asked his buddies ‘Who was that guy?’

‘It was the Pope,’ another replied. ‘He’s in direct contact with Heaven and has access to all wisdom.

‘Well,’ the logger said, ‘he may have access to all wisdom but he doesn’t know squat about bear hunting! By the way, is the bait still alive, or do we need to go back to Portland and get another one?’

These deaths are rare and are generally the fault of the human. Last SC gator death involved a woman wading out in the water to pet the gator. She had a snoot full and the gator had a mouthful.

Indeed they do. And, for all their other faults, the French do one thing right. In-person voting on election day with photo ID, paper ballots placed in a ballot box, proper transparent procedures, hand count of ballots in plain view of observers. If only we would do the same.

“It’s absolutely horrible,” he said. “As far as I know, most neighbors have always treated the alligators with a healthy respect and almost like part of the community.”

Lesson....gators gonna gator....

From Houston east along the gulf coast and pretty near the whole state of Florida, the regions are a small elevation above sea level, crisscrossed with bayous and drainage canals, dotted with lakes, storm water retention ponds plus swamps, estuaries and marshes here and there. Gators are everywhere.

The only thing that surprises me about a gator in a golf course pond is that it was so big, 11 feet. I doubt if this pond was the gator’s usual home, not enough food. More likely, it lived in a nearby canal, went wondering about and stumbled on the pond very recently.

I did NOT notice anyone say an empty clip with any of the popular self defense weapons would likely have kept the victim out of the retention pond.

An armed society is a safer society.

After the alligator finished its work, the victim might properly be referred to in the plural number.

Gator had a gun? I mean the news think that everyone dies by guns owned by law obeying citizens! I guess this gator must have used a gun.

Prayers for the victims ..

Why didn't they just kill the gator? Why did it have to be euthanized? Also, the gator carried them into the retention pond. Did one of the unfortunate victims escape?

“Truly a tragic story. It appears only one person was involved, sex unknown, and the reporter used “they” instead of “he or she” — sloppy and grammatically incorrect, but so common now.”

Been using it for over 65 years.

Alligators perform a valuable community service, removing idiots and stray dogs. If it wasnt for them, there would be three times as many drunk or meth-head Florida people driving around hurting people.

A lady was killed by a bear here in southwest Colorado last summer while walking her dog in the woods. She was a well-known liberal activist. People still blamed her. They’re nuts.

Alligator meat is nasty tasting s**t. I put it about two notches above Hakarl which is something you never want to taste twice.

They should put all mail in drop boxes at the edge of retention ponds.

From the article;

Repak said a two-lane road runs between the pond where the incident happened and another retention pond behind his home. It’s not uncommon for alligators to be seen crossing that road as they move from pond to pond.

Repak said he’s always been cautious while walking his dogs.

“We’ve never gone anywhere close to them,” he said. “When we walk the dogs near that pond, we walk them in the median. We don’t walk them on that bank because you just don’t know where they’re lurking. You will never know where they’re lurking.”

It’s hard to tell just what happened from the article, but going by what the neighbor said, it sounds like the road was very close to the pond. It’s possible the victim was just walking along the road or going to his mailbox when the gator was passing nearby, grabbed the victim and dragged him into the pond.

It’s amazing how fast they can move:
