A well-spoken lady in WI called a phone-in radio program in Chicago and said she had 3 young children and adding up welfare payments, food stamps, rent and other subsidies, she would need a job that paid over $46,000 to have the equivalent take-home income.

We need a workfare system: If you receive any gov't transfer payment, you show up for work at 8AM every morning and work to 5PM and earn your handout, whether it's cleaning toilets in gov't buildings or sweeping streets, you work. This system is in place in Europe and it doesn't take people long to figure out they may as well find a better-paying job than what they receive.

plus lets say she found a job for 60,000

that’s a difference of 12,000

assuming 2000 work hours per year for full time

that only $6 per hour

plus insurance..

here in IL if you are on low income state insurance everything is free with no deductible

A friend of mine had to go to the ER in an ambulance. Both the ride and visit were free. If I did that I would have to pay at least a grand out of pocket with the deductibles and co pays

I’ve been arguing the same thing for a decade now.

The marginal benefit of working vs. not working is not worth it.

Rent, food, Medicade, legal help, utilities, etc. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, it’s the $46K you cite.

That includes 52 weeks paid vacation.

vs. let’s say you clear $30/hr - that’s $62K

So the marginal benefit is 16K (less gas, lunch, etc.)

And 2 weeks vacation

Easy math, for those with no work ethic.

Yep. Just part of the commie program to destabilize this republic. And we give a welfare mother more money when she has more kids. What’s the logic in that? You incentivize what you pay for. Her handout should be cut if she drops another kid. And then cut some more over time. You need a disincentive for having kids politicians make taxpayers support.

Heck, I would be happy for them to show up at 9 and go home at 3. Something is better than nothing.

Similarly, in South Korea EVERYONE has a job of some kind. You don’t see people loitering and gathering to sell drugs or themselves like in western countries.
