Mine included slingshots, baseball bats and any action figure with a gun. I thought light sabers were stupid.

The story behind that guy at the end of the training film was that it was a hot day, and he put the vent of the LOX tube into his special coveralls to cool off.

Then, he took a break and went to have a smoke, and his oxygen saturated coveralls literally exploded.

Dominick’s mother Maria Rua was supposed to be watching all the boys.

Stupid kids, doing stupid kid things.

I hope that little boy recovers...some do get lucky, like many of us posting here who could have gone in a different direction, but didn’t.

Many stupid kids aren’t so lucky. Most aren’t bad kids, they just don’t survive the learning curve.

Sad.

I remember buying a bunch of Estes rocket engines and building a rocket sled on one of my sister’s roller skates. We taped a whole bunch of them together, but couldn’t make a fuse that lit them all off at the same time...we weren’t that sophisticated yet.

But that is the kind of thing kids do.

I suppose the mother thought she could be sued as she was in charge of watching all the boys. So the blame game insued.

I lit a field on fire one time playing around with those matches. My co-conspirator ran off, but I couldn’t because I lost my glasses trying to stamp it out, and was there when the fire truck showed up.

Base Security took me to my dad’s office, he was the XO on the base at the time.

My poor dad. I recall he didn’t do what I expected (which was to get menacingly angry) but just asked me to explain, and when I did, he was just quietly speechless.

Three boys dousing a soccer ball with gasoline and then lighting it on fire to kick around - is that such a boy thing to do or what?

Yes, I could definitely see myself doing this as a boy. Except we didn't have soccer balls in those days. We didn't even know what soccer was outside of some guy named Pelé down in Brazil that Howard Cosell would sometimes talk about on Wide World of Sports.

Maybe we would have done it with a kickball.

Exactly. Name me one boy who didn’t try to set up a ramp for his bike using a cinderblock and a plank of wood, only to nearly kill himself trying to get airborne on it.

It is amazing sometimes that any of us make it to adulthood. I was particularly stupid in that respect. Nowadays, they would have the Children Support Services in to talk to my parents because I was getting hurt so often.

I was stupid and clumsy, and that isn’t a good combination in a kid...but hey, I made it.

Of course. Many activities become more fun when fire is introduced. ;-)

Heck. Kids get into stuff. I remember when I was 13, my brother had one of those tubular mini-bikes with a lawnmower engine. It stopped working, and by God, I was going to take it apart and make it work.

I started by draining the gas tank into any available container, and I grabbed a big styrofoam cup.

When the gas hit it, to my astonishment, it completely melted. So I found an old Folger’s coffee can and drained it into that, which filled it about halfway up.

I was curious, so I dipped the remainder of the cup into the gas in the coffee can, and...it just disappeared.

I threw the rest of it in, and it disappeared.

I got insanely curious, and found a bag of stryofoam pellets and began tossing them in...and they simply vanished. I began putting more and more of them in, and grabbed one of my dad’s flathead screwdrivers, and began mixing them in.

Soon, it turned into a thick sludge, and stopped melting the Styrofoam packing peanuts. At that point, I saw my dad walking towards the garage, so I hurriedly put it behind an old wooden cabinet and promptly forgot about it.

A year or two later, as we were moving when my dad retired, we were cleaning out the garage to put things into a moving van. As I approached the garage, I saw my dad, head down, one hand on his hip, and in the other hand, he was holding that coffee can full of sludgy gas/styrofoam mix that had completely solidified, and the screwdriver was sticking out of it, firmly embedded. I did an about face and left immediately.

I should have asked him about that before he died...if he remembered, what was going through his mind when he found that coffee can?

As kids, we use to get in a tight group, maybe 5 or 7 of us, and throw steel darts straight up, and we’d run as fast as possible in all directions to try and avoid getting hit...

You too! What a coincidence. Did you forgot about model rocket engines?

When the little Flashes were about 1 and 2 we went to a tot lot that had a very wide though not very high plastic slide with a big platform at the top.

Also people would bring toys to leave there, including some small plastic tricycles.

I saw some older boys, six or seven, who were probably too old for the tot lot, riding the trikes. I asked my self “How long will it be before they decide to ride the trikes down the slide?” About five minutes.
