“Steps” are forward steps, i.e., walking. It’s all the fad to count daily steps.
In the old days, you’d put a mechanical pedometer on your ankle to count steps and distance. Now your phone does it for you (as long as you are carrying it).

A phone is a pain to walk with. Get a Fitbit wrist band or similar to count steps. Plus they are more accurate than your phone.
