OTOH, Alexander the Great led his cavalry across a river, ignoring the hail of arrows which was said to be lousy. The bowmen shot all their arrows, then turned to take refuge behind the crappy Persian infantry. Darius III was relying on the broken terrain and numerical superiority.
Instead, Darius’ entire left lost its nerve and the entire Persian force cracked. But of course, Great Al was a genius. :^) Leadership was key.
