JUST IN: Iran, with a population of approximately 86 million people, and Argentina, with a population of approximately 46 million people, have both applied to join the BRICS.

The acronym BRICS stands for Federative Republic of Brazil, Russian Federation, Republic of India, People’s Republic of China, and Republic of South Africa.

These benefits are said to include increased trade and market access, foreign direct investment, and, most importantly, increased bargaining power and a voice in international issues. South Africa’s BRICS membership allows it to absorb the shocks and threats of globalization.
