I still don’t understand “RIG FOR RED.” Can someone explain?

Has to do with submarines using a red light when going for battle or something of that nature, getting ready for war.

Red light doesn't destroy night vision.

As part of the darken ship protocol all white lights, other than navigation lights visible on the exterior of the ship are extinguished. Hatches to the exterior of the ship have black light baffles to avoid showing white light. Watch standers on the bridge use red filters. Other spaces which open to the bridge or topside shift over to red lighting as necessary. Example are CIC and the Signalmans' shelter.
