To freeze milk, just freeze it. DH recommends opening the gallon jug and pouring out a cup or two first. I've never done any of that. The gallon jugs even have a pop-out on the side to accommodate freezing.

We had one that cracked upon thawing so he likes to do that. Costco milk doesn’t as it has room at the top of the jug.

It was always my understanding that the popout on the side of the milk carton was to warn that the milk had gone bad and expanded.
