“For years now, American democracy has been under attack as state legislatures, Republican Members of Congress, and the Supreme Court have all taken steps to undermine voting rights. States have purged names from voter rolls, limited access to voter registration, closed polling places in communities of color, and used voter ID laws to disenfranchise marginalized voters. In 2021, state legislatures passed 34 laws in at least 19 states that target voting rights. It has been almost a decade since the Supreme Court struck down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder. I’m proud to have joined with my colleagues to introduce the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the Votings Rights Act and stop widespread attempts at voter suppression. This legislation honors the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis, an icon of the Civil Rights movement. This bill would restore historic protections against state laws that have the purpose or effect of discriminating on the basis of race.”
