Domino’s Isn’t Pizza. It’s Something Else Entirely.

Is Domino’s pizza? If you furrow your brow in confusion at this inquiry, tilting your head and replying with some variation on “of course it is,” I have news for you.

To clarify, I’m not a New Yorker, Chicagoan, or Detroiter required to uphold the strict pizza laws of my home city. I grew up in northern New Jersey, where the prevalence of Italian families and our proximity to the Big Apple meant you could find a slice any given moment at any of the two dozen joints in a 10-mile radius.

So, if I’m no purist, why am I questioning Domino’s like this? What I want to clarify is that while Domino’s is always technically pizza, it is not always functionally pizza. In case your furrowed brow has deepened and your head has tilted another 10 degrees, let me explain.

First hitchhiking ride I ever had was by a Domino’s driver smoking a joint.

The doctor might as well prescribe Dominos for preparation for my next colonoscopy.

They hate Domino’s because they aren’t reflexively woke. The pizza is fine. An order of magnitude better than rainbow encrusted Pizza Hut crap.

Pizza is one of those things that there is no standard. I suppose you could go to Italy and hunt down ‘authentic’. It boils down to your personal tastes and where you want to spend your money. As a kid in Philadelphia, every corner deli had pizza (hoagies and cheesesteaks for that matter). You got used to your neighborhood’s pizza and that was the way it was supposed to be (although you knew no better). Today, I stick to Mom and Pop restaurants as much as possible and eschew anything chain and corporate. When I travel, I go for the local places. It really doesn’t matter where that is or what kind of food it is. I am generally satisfied with the product and try not to compare to what I grew up with.

NY has the best pizza- NYC and surrounding counties. I have about five different pizza places which are my go-to’s, depending where I’m at. The place up the road from me- Sette Vente- cannot be beat.

BTW- Donald Trump Jr is always in the restaurant (Sette Vente) with his kids and the owner, an Italian immigrant, is a hardcore Conservative.

I’m in the minority here, but I really like Dominos, especially compared to places like Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, or Papa John’s. I love their pan pizza, and their thin crust is really good, too.

In 1980 I owned a carry out pizzeria in Inkster, MI not far from Dearborn, where the Reagan campaign HQ on Michigan Ave was located. They called and placed an order. Shortly later they called to cancel because the Big Guy was landing for a rally. I delivered the order for free anyway. I had his poster in the shop, after all. I don’t know if he ever got a slice.

I discovered Blaze Pizza a few years ago during a meandering trek across America. AMAZING pizza. Thankfully they’re growing as a franchise. Looking forward to having one near me soon.

Great story!

I had a brother-in-law who drove Mondale around Madison when he was running for President against Reagan in 1984. The brother-in-law was an up and coming Democrat. He said Walter Mondale was the biggest A$$hole he had ever run across. Completely self-centered and arrogant.

Kroc said that McDonald's was not about food, but about real estate.

I guess Domino's is not about pizza, but about roofing tiles.

I used to order Domino’s when I lived in Canandaigua New York and I’d order the large pepperoni with wings (came in a combo) and it was pretty good at that time and place. Other than that, I lived in MA north shore and would never have not ordered local and get the best pizza in my lifetime so far. I sure do miss it.

I’m as far from a pizza snob as you can get. Heck, I even like a flour tortilla with catsup for sauce, a little Cavenders Greek spice, cheese and pepperoni and stuck in the oven at 400F for a couple minutes.

But the last time I bought a Dominos was about three years ago when they wanted to charge me $2.00 each for those little Parmesan cheese packets.

Oh well, the quality & taste of the pizzas had already gone downhill well before that

I notice that a lot of places here in Cali that claim to have NY style pizza have a bunch of slices ready to go, i.e. stale. They throw them in the oven for a quick heat-up and will throw a couple extra items on there if you request.

Not my idea of a great pizza.

English muffins make great “pizza crusts”. Some sauce, some cheese, and a pepperoni or two on each. Great finger food for parties.

You are right. They have a Pepe’s in Danbury as well. Not nearly as good as New Haven. The Mohegan Sun is pretty good too. I only went to Waterbury one once and was disappointed. They have a Texas Roadhouse next door that is great and I like how you can get peanuts while you are waiting and throw the shells to the floor.
