Whiny Space Tourists Say They Were Too Busy on the Space Station

A SpaceNews report published yesterday tells us what Larry Connor, Mark Pathy, Michael López-Alegría and Eytan Stibbe thought about their trip to the ISS, because the team attended a press conference to answer media questions. The trip was initially supposed to take eight days but was extended to 15 because of weather conditions on Earth. The extra time was helpful, Axiom’s paying customers said, but the crew still felt rushed.

Although the private astronauts paid more than $50 million each for the trip, it was definitely a working vacation. Some of the crew’s experiments included testing self-assembling robot tech, working with stem cells and creating holograms with Microsoft HoloLens. Michael Suffredini, president and chief executive of Axiom Space, said Axiom will better integrate future missions what with the other astronauts are already doing so nobody is disrupted. Suffredini wants future flights to last longer, too — up to 60 days, according to SpaceNews. It’s possible the company’s changes could make missions less jam-packed and lead to more time to stop and smell the solar system’s roses.

It’s easy to forget that astronauts do actual work and don’t just float around for fun. Many are tasked with important scientific research on their missions.

Low earth orbit is a waste of time and money. “Space exploration” my rear end.

Yes, for $50 million, let them do or not do whatever they want. I figure the “whinning” is just from NASA and others upset without tourists.

They were lucky, most of the last crew did not make it back.
Here is a still shot from one of the cameras on board of a unlucky crew member....

When man in space can accomplish more than robotic missions at less cost I am for it. It is not this today.

They had ambitious goals that took longer the they expected, nasa charged axiom to use the station 37k per day. Space charged 50 million for the dragon, all 4 trained for their stay..

The ISS is a national laboratory. Thr Chinese seem the think a station is a good idea, axiom is planning a station and actually building one.

I’m pretty sure there was no whining involved. It was not a vacation. Axiom is planning to build a private commercial space station in the near future. The ISS is a world class laboratory so if you’re going there it is to work there. All baby steps towards a new space economy that will dwarf the economies of earth in time. Perhaps within the life time of some FReepers.

The extra days were due to weather conditions at landing sites and Axiom was not charged for the extra days.

If I had a chance to be in the space station, I would definitely jump at it.
I don’t think my credit is good enough to do a $50,000,000 loan, however.🙁

Just call it a student loan and the government will fight to have it forgiven.
