"Commonly known as just Rio, the city is also nicknamed A Cidade Maravilhosa — "The Marvelous City." Rio features more than twenty-five miles of sandy beaches, the most famous being Copacabana, Ipanema, and Praia de Botafogo (Botafogo Beach). Tourist hotels and sidewalk cafes extend the entire way along the beaches. Some of the most famous local landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer ('Cristo Redentor') atop Corcovado mountain (the Hunchback) overlooking the entire city. Several of us rode the cable car up to Sugarloaf mountain (Pão de Açúcar), where from its 1299-foot height, we could see airliners to and from Rio International Airport flying below us, into and out of Guanabara Bay."
