Insane that so many mothers do not use nature’s method of feeding babies. Very few women don’t have enough milk. I”ve known dozens of mothers and maybe one couldn’t feed her baby with her own milk. And in the olden days in the US women made formula with cow’s milk, water and sugar. Infinitely better than store bought crap. Some with soy in it!

COMMENT: Hi Martin! Thank you for all you do. I was discussing the baby formula shortage with my 94-year-old Italian grandmother, and it opened my eyes to how resourceful people can be when left with no alternatives.

Baby formula was not an option in Sicily when her children were born. In fact, she did not learn about baby formula or disposable diapers until she immigrated to America. Disposable diapers were still not an option for poor immigrants and she cleaned each diaper by hand. As for formula, as most mothers know, occasionally it is not possible to produce enough milk for the day. Cow’s milk was never an option as they thought it would harm the baby.

My grandmother explained how she would put a piece of bread in a pot of boiling water, remove the bread, and use the water to feed her baby. Everyone in the town knew one another, and if a woman was having trouble producing milk, she simply would bring her baby to another woman in the town. I asked her if the women charged for their milk and she looked at me as if I were crazy. They did it from the goodness of their heart. There was such a strong sense of community that everyone in the town worked together. I cannot see that happening in today’s society.

My two girls wouldn’t latch on and were poor feeders.

So my wife bottle fed them with pumped breast milk.

The TV bizness guys reported late yesterday that 68% of US women with young kids are feeding them on the WIC program. The WIC program only allows two (I think) brands of baby formula. One of them is Abbott Labs brand. What could go wrong? But 68%. REALLY 68% There’s now way that 68% of US babies have special food issues. No bleeping way. I have to get a book of new, bigger, words to describe just how pathetic this whole baby food mess is. The WIC program is an insidious form of socialism/graft if there ever is one.

Wet nurse used to be very common. Even the most noble people had great respect for them. Put aside the proper nutrients in human breast milk. The social bonding between servants and nobility was rooted from the noble baby. I believe this was a critical aspect of civilization that was lost.
