The only time I visited NYC was for a family wedding in 1984 when the situation was presumably far better than it is today.

The first welcoming words I heard was from the cabbie at LaGuardia:

“So, what brings you to this cesspool?”

Nearly forty years later and I remember it like it was yesterday.
