I wanted to think of the word for two consonants combining to make a single sound, like ch or sh. I asked Tom and Vlad. “Dipthong!” they chorused, but that’s wrong: dipthongs are only vowels.
As I was explaining the concept in more detail, the word came to me: digraph.
Meanwhile, Tom said, “Dipthong sounds like an elementary school insult!” and he walked into the next room and told Kathleen, “Get your feet off the sofa, you dipthong!” She replied, “Shut up, Tom! You’re a dipthong!”
DP came out of the sunroom and said, “It sounds like Kathleen just called Tom a dipthong.” “She did.”
