There are two main Ukrainian brigades facing off against the entire combat power remaining in the Russian army. The 53rd Mechanized Brigade is holding the line at Severodonetsk, their headquarters are in the city. The Russians have moved behind them to the west with the advance out of Popasna. The goal on paper is to encircle Severodonetsk and destroy the 53rd Mechanized Brigade.
However the Ukrainians have a second full strength brigade, the 54th Mechanized Brigade, headquartered at Bakhmut. They have a rapid response force, over 200 tanks in inventory, and at least one new artillery battalion with 155mm towed howitzers. They have the full support of the local territorial defense brigades and volunteer citizens. They have effective transportation, logistics and rations; front line troops in Severodonetsk are getting kitchen cooked meals delivered warm into their positions.
