1) The mass shooting in Texas comes on the eve of the Senate confirmation hearing tomorrow for ATF Director nominee Steve Dettelbach. Expect the shooting in Texas to now command much of the dialogue in that hearing.
2) Dettelbach goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee in the morning. Dettelbach is the second nominee President Biden put forth to run ATF. Former nominee David Chipman withdrew his nomination in September after opposition from Second Amendment advocates.
3) Dettelbach advocated the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban and universal background checks when he ran unsuccessfully for Attorney General in Ohio in 2018.
4) The ATF Director position has always been a hot potato. In fact, Todd Jones was the last, Senate-confirmed (not acting) ATF Director. The Senate confirmed Jones as ATF Director n 2013 after he served for two years as acting director.
5) The ATF Director post was made subject to Senate confirmation in 2006. Jones is the only person confirmed by the Senate to lead ATF.
6) The shooting also comes as the Senate is trying to advance a domestic terrorism bill in the aftermath of the Buffalo massacre. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) filed cloture today, teeing up a procedural vote on Thursday.
7) That vote would require 60 yeas to break a filibuster to begin debate on the bill. But the vote will fall well short
