My 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Supercharged HEMI V8’s headlights are sealed HID (High Intensity Discharge) units, with turn signal and running lights, costing $650 each plus labor, and don’t allow a single bulb replacement.

Damn, I miss using a Philips screwdriver and redplaceable, cheap bulbs.

I don't. In exchange for the expense and complexity, we get far better visibility at night. Headlights on today's cars are amazingly good. It's a trade-off that's more than worth it for me.

I got my license during WWII so I know a little about sealed beams.

It is not correct that lights are better now than they were then,

The lights on my RAM are of that designer projector type and they came from the factory with crap bulbs...the worst lights I ever had on a vehicle.

I replaced the bulbs with a brighter bulb and now on high beams they are acceptable but not great. The low beams are so poor that it is not easy to negotiate the complex entry/exit lanes on the interstates.

Because we also have a Jeep with HID lights, I do have a fair comparison. I would never spend the money for the difference as there is none.

Bright lights do not necessarily mean that they project further. On a lonely dark night on the interstate just note how your lights compare to the vehicle passing you. He may have HID’s that blinded you in your mirrors, but he can see no further down the road.

And I do know how to adjust the aim. I wish every one knew how.

I used to use Cibié Quartz-Halogen lights - illegal in US back in the 70s - but would have to change them out for state inspection each year. So I guess I don't miss it either, as I get older. I can easily write the check for repairs.

Simple solution is LED replacements.

I replaced the sealed 5x8 lights in my 91 jeep with leds.
I don’t need my light bar at all now, nor high beam.

80 bucks on amazon. Not the best spread pattern, but its good enough for me, and doesn’t blind oncoming traffic.
