AOL was # 1 on the web long before Google or Facebook or Twitter.
Netscape browser died long ago after being the #1 browser.
Internet Explorer from Microsoft was the # 1 browser for along time before getting clobbered by Chrome.
AOL, Prodigy, and Compuserve employed walled garden business models. The world wide web was outside of their walled gardens and as the web grew their walled garden model no longer worked.
Netscape owned the browser market until Microsoft bundled their rival browser with Windows. Netscape went on to create the Mozilla foundation which still exists and produces the Firefox browser.
