Oh wow, what you just brought back to me!! Schonland’s. I was working at a radio station in New Hampshire, and we had a crazy commercial - something about Schonland’s skinless, it went on and on, was a tongue twister.

Is that the same thing as trail bologna? That stuff is so hideous I can’t even stand to be in the same room with it.

Tried Nathans once to see what all the fuss was about. Never again! They were slimy.

Ted’s Hot Dogs in Buffalo uses Sahlens and I think they are better than Hoffman’s.

Next time I’m in Buffalo, I’ll have to get some for my kids. I can’t eat them any more :(

If you are in VA, is there a Wegmans near you?

In Buffalo you can get them at the local grocery stores and I’m thinking that Wegman’s may be able to order some in.

Ah…the tastes of my youth. I look at the shelf and I see “Ballpark: $3.49 / Bar-S $0.89”. No brainer, done deal, take me down to the Bar S Ranch. 🤤

Here is a good 1 hour PBS program from the 80's or 90's called "A Hotdog Program".

It is available on youtube from WQED in Pittsburgh.

A Hotdog Program

My favorite dog, a Chinese dry sausage, Lop Chong, is from the now retired owner named Calvin, or Cal for short.

He owned The Royal Frankfurter on Fourth Street in San Rafael, CA from the early 70's through about 2010.

Locally very famous, and about 1 hour from San Francisco's China Town and the treasures therein.

Also a note about the Varsity in Atlanta, via the barker behind the counter calling the shots as he greeted his customers, " Have your order in your mind, and your money in your hand!" About 20 registers, and long lines always.

Yes, we get them at Fry’s (Kroger). I used to love Nathans before I found these. They have texture, not the usual hot dog mush.

Every once in awhile I will eat a dog on a bun with no condiments. Nothing to get in the way of the flavor.

Bar S Franks was our go-to when we were raising a family and money was tight. They sell 3lb packages cheap, and kids don’t know any better. I preferred their Polish sausage dogs.

taste and texture of some kind of boiled mystery meat slurry

That's mechanically separated whatever. I prefer beef.

I prefer grilled, but the truth is, they are our I’m too tired to cook meal. Straight from freezer to a sauce pan full of water, crank up the heat, and when they hit 165, dinner is served.

That’s one thing I really like about fatty meats such as sausage, they can really take a beating. There’s a joke in there somewhere. Have at it.

My father-in-law grew up in Brooklyn. To him, ketchup on a hot dog was sacrilege. Me, I use mustard, unless there are four or five other condiments on it, then ketchup joins the party.

The best dog has a natural skin and is grilled so when you bite into it the skin crackle pops.

Yep. Gotta have that "snap".
