Many years ago, my cousin disappeared while hunting by himself. Search and rescue looked for him for three days. They found him when they heard his hunting dog barking and followed the sound. As they approached, she was lying snuggled right next to him, barking frantically. He had gone into a diabetic seizure and died before he could access the supplies in his backpack.

Reading this saddened me.

It was a very sad time for my family. He was 30 years old and the oldest of all the grandchildren. My grandmother was never the same after he died. As the firstborn, he was her favorite (plus he was just a really amazing human being). My aunt descended into this state of anger and bitterness from which she has never returned.

The dog went to live with my cousin’s fiancée and died very shortly afterwards.

Sorry to bum everyone out. I guess there are certain things that happen in some families that just expose the cracks in the foundation.
