I don’t think this was staged. But I do think it was a spur-of-the-moment publicity stunt by Smith. Smith was initially laughing while the Mrs. was not. I’m guessing that she said something to him indicating that she was offended, and he immediately seized it as an opportunity to play Mr. Badass defending the honor of his woman... while simultaneously making himself the main story of the 2022 Oscars.
