Parallel lives.
I took my GED in IIRC my late 30’s just to please my mother. I didn’t study. Math I only did 70%, the other tests I got every question right.
WHen I was in school I stopped trying or paying attention in 7th grade. School to me was prison.

Yes, my Mom was there to see her son graduate. With honors too, as it turned out. She was so proud. Good memories.

I was a terrible student in high school. Really stopped caring about school in 9th grade, same time that my older brother got very sick and became disabled. Kind of just didn't see any value in school really.
My sister dropped out in 11th grade - she ended up getting her GED, and then went on to get a 4 year degree in business admin (as did I eventually). I think my brothers situation was a huge family event, and it hit us all in a pretty rough way. Slowed down our progress, though I have to say that we all eventually "snapped out of it", so to speak. Given what they teach in schools these days, and what they don't teach, I think that in many cases, the high school diploma isn't worth the paper its written on.
