Hope in the Healer

Hope in the Healer.

Recently during a warming spell, I was glad when I heard the peepers started to sing and it was a first sign that spring was on its way here. In side our home, I took down cozy plaid winter curtains and put up soft pastel floral curtains to see the hazy play of light in a soft glow.

Recently, while we were having our morning worship time, we heard a thump against the window. My husband went out and he found an injured young male Cardinal. I watched as he picked it up with such tenderness, my heart was touched knowing that this strong man has a tender and compassionate heart. He carried the dazed bird to the back deck and I got a soft blanket to make a warm nest for it to recover on. We kept watch over the bird through the glass of the door and it slowly began to perk up. I went out and got down on my knees close to it and I gently whispered to the bird, “hey there baby, I know you have been injured, but now it is time for you to lift up your wings to get back up in the air and fly” Again, the bird rose up a little, showing signs of recovery. I breathed a healing prayer over it because I know that my God knows even when one of these birds of the field fall. Soon the Cardinal flew away and as we watched the colors of his feathers in flight he flew back into the upper light; Relieved, we knew that we had helped the little bird. I wondered how much more does the Father love and care for us?

As the winter gasps and shudders with the oncoming change of seasons, an icy snow fell and covered the ground with a layer of glass-like droplets of shimmering sparkling light in the crisp clear air. I decided to go out to check on our fruit orchard to see if they were going to bloom before the last freeze. Since a stroke a few years ago, I have balance issues and the snow was hard packed and slippery. I began to loose my balance; I was in such fear of falling as I was alone and out of sight of the house. Old memories of being abandoned as a child and left to die in the snow began to make me throw myself a pity party. I love a pity party; don't we all at times? So the devil got to gloat for a moment. Then as I trembled and was scared, I noticed that by the edge of the cedars two bunnies were chasing each other, then one jumped over the other one in celebration of the coming spring and new life. In my heart, I heard God telling me “this my creation, and they are dancing for joy in spite of the hardships of life”. Then, just as like when I whispered to the bird, God took my hand and reminded me “come up now with me, come to the presence of like spirits who praise me, for you are accepted in my beloved, my daughter”. I lifted up my hands and praised my God in joy a midst the snowy landscape.

I had been wounded by people in my past, and like the cardinal, I have flown into windows that gave the appearance of a safe avenue, but in reality were deceptive walls intended to do harm. Even though injured I kept trying to make relationships work for the sake of themselves. But I have learned and know that it is not how many times I have fallen but rather how many times I have been healed, forgave and flown away in faith and hope. The loving Hand of God that holds you will never let you go. As I realized these truths it seemed to me that the slippery snow had melted under my feet and I walked on glimmering rainbow crystals of brilliant, comforting light. Soon, I made it safely back to house and sat by a warm fire in my husbands comforting arms. God, who brings springtime after the snow, would help me to be like our Orchard, to produce the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
