To understand the war in the Ukraine you have to look at a map of the black sea. Whomever controls this island Crimea controls the region. The dominate country will control this territory. It's that simple. It's been fought over for literally thousands of years long before Russia existed.
There has been a few times the population was forced out. The last two are the ones people talk about today. The first being Genghis Khan brought in the Crimean Tatar (Turks.) Stalin Forced them out and brought in Russian citizens for their replacement.
In 1997, Russia and Ukraine signed the Partition Treaty, establishing two independent national fleets and dividing armaments and bases between them. Ukraine also agreed to lease major parts of its new bases in Sevastopol to the Russian Black Sea Fleet until 2017.
In 2014 Russia sent in some combat troops and took the Island as should be expected as I explained earlier.
Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. During this time Russia built the Crimean Bridge (Map on the right near Kerch) finished in 2018 to go around the Ukraine. When the Bridge was being finished the Ukrainian set up missiles near the bridge to destroy it. Kerch Strait incident took place where Ukrainians war ships refused to leave disputed waters. The Russians captured the ships and held the sailors.
The world came down on Russia over this incident including Trump (canceling a meeting with Putin over it.) Nikki Haley called it "outrageous violation" of Ukrainian territory. (MSM LOVED this and could stop writing about it)
The Ukraine was upset set up Marshal law they imposed no men between the ages 16 through 60 can enter the Ukraine. The Ukraine released the Marshal law and extended the no men restrictions to this day.
This in essence made it shipment of goods had to go over the Bridge and the world was not going to side with Russia over Crimea. Ukraine took a large financial hit over this. Confiscation of personal bank accounts happened in Ukraine last year.

Of course the clincher was negotiations for the Ukraine to enter NATO. Which would allow NATO navel ports which goes against the Ukrainian constitution to allow foreign bases on their lands. As i stated earlier. Whomever controls Crimea controls the region. Russia will not accept the loss of Crimea.
