This strategy assumes that the monies will be there later, vs earlier.

When I was working for the fed gov’t mid 90s, the HR department implored me and other fellows to invest in the gov’t equivalent of a 401K, because SS would not be there for me when I retired.

I understand the doubt about whether SS money would still be around. When I started working about six decades ago I assumed it would not. And I always planned on never needing SS. But It seemed like there would always be some sort of health care connection so that was my goal——to build up just enough SS credit to cover whatever is around for health insurance-—and it worked OK so far, at least. If medicare blows up that will require some re-figgering.
