It’s the old school group think that politcal views are a straight line. I graduated high for school in 1982 and we were taught that on the far left is communism and the far right is Fascism. That’s not true. In reality it’s a circle.

There are 2 axis involved (maybe more) - there used to be a Libertarian test (a more sophisticated one that the simple on we see now, with many questions) that would plot you on a 2 axis chart. I recall that I was right of center, and more libertarian (less authoritarian) than the center, but I haven't seen the test on line for a while. There's a simpler version, but I don't think it really does the job.

We were taught similar in high school. And it was wrong, as you've noted.
