Very simply: Putin said early on give us some assurances that the Ukraine will not Join NATO. The US refused. Giving Ukrainian to NATO is basically giving up the Black sea to NATO and the Russians believe that is a massive security risk.

2. Russians official story there are tactical missions taking place. That can mean some limited troops and aircraft.

He makes some very interesting points around min 12 and then again min 16 about handing out weapons to just anybody/everybody/civilians in the Ukraine. What Russian soldiers would do when they see civilians with weapons and how the media plays this up - using it for their own narrative.
