They’re not the only ones unable to get chips. Lead times are at 1 to 2 years for some parts.

That trade war declared on China works really good....for China.
In the countries where the Chinese cars are selling their dealers are the only ones who have no problems with the inventory and sell for MRSP.

The story I have heard as the root of the chip shortage is that automakers are using old slower chip designs that are not a profitable to sell as more expensive new chips. This combined with the automakers way of demanding price reductions or at least price stability has made their Chinese suppliers focus elsewhere.
Another possibility is the Chinese are using the chips for their own purposes right now like secretly building up all manner of smart weapon inventories, while telling their American customers lies.

Perhaps the Ford Corporation integrated some of the design specs from the Pinto into the Bronco. They’re both named after horses after all.

And all this time I thought the Pinto was named after the bean! (j/k - but hey, it would be more fitting)

Factories are not running, like everything else, they constantly run out of everything. A couple of weeks ago, truck production was stopped due to no wiper modules. About 75-80% of the vehicles shipped are already sold on arrival.

I’ve managed new car dealerships since 1991, and currently manager a Ford dealership about 10 miles from the manufacturing facility.

Replacement parts, building supplies, ammo, everything is hard to get. A couple of weeks ago, parts stores were struggling to find oil filters for a 350 Chev. IMCA, which oversees much of the dirt track racing allowed drivers to groove tires in many classes (normally against rules) because nobody can buy a tire.

All this is pretty normal in Communist countries.

“The story I have heard as the root of the chip shortage is that automakers are using old slower chip designs that are not a profitable to sell as more expensive new chips. “

The story I heard is the automakers relied too much on just-in-time ordering while other segments made earlier pre-orders leaving the automakers at the end of the line.

Both could be true.
