Is taking care of the chain on a ship considered a lowly job, or are the Mates considered heroic for such dangerous, dirty work?

Care and preservation of all deck gear is part of the Boatswains Mate rating description. That said, many new sailors arriving on ship without attending an A-school for a particular rating will be assigned to the Deck Department/Division depending on the size and mission of the ship.

The work involves more than a little rust chipping and painting and is generally avoided by most sailors when they can. Many thive. Boatswains Mates and Gunners Mates make up the bulk of the armed roving patrol. The Boatswains Mate of the Watch is always armed whether in port or at sea.
