Donald Trump took classified documents to Mar-a-Lago, National Archives says

WASHINGTON — The 15 boxes of White House records that were stored at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence contained items marked as classified national security information, the National Archives and Records Administration said Friday. The agency said the matter has been referred to the Justice Department.
In a response to a Feb. 9 letter to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, the National Archives confirmed reports that Trump took government records with him down to Florida when he left office in January 2021.
(is this the part of the movie where the DOJ starts an investigation and DJT jumps out of the cake and proves that he is the real president and has the right to have those documents?)

The president can declassify or classify; he has originating/original classification powers.

Trump probably has a TS SCI clearance, probably higher. Was his clearance rescinded after he left office? Probably not if he is still deemed to have a “need to know”. Because he may have access to classified documents doesn’t mean he SHOULDN’T have access. The National Archives doesn’t grant or rescind clearances.

Someone remind me who the original classification authority for the government is... is it the National Archives or is it the President of the United States? All Trump has to say is “they are not classified” and poof! not classified.
Of course, it doesn’t stop a bunch of never-could-be deep staters from trying to claw back the files and get them reclassified after the fact by a subsequent president.
Trump go through the files with his lawyer, store the files at an unguarded safe in his lawyer’s office, print off the copies that he thinks the archives needs back, delete all the rest, and then tell the national archives that the other files were just wedding plans and yoga appointments.

Unless he took those documents, after losing the election, they were his to take while as President.
THere is no policy that I’m aware of that classified documents stay in the White House only.
