I sat on a jury once for a full day of hearing the case. When we reconvened on the second morning, the judge came out and tossed the case because of something that the public defender had brought to his attention. He explained it to us. We never went to deliberations though.
In your case the judge did the right thing. No sense going forward when the evidence is clear that a criminal defendant is not guilty.
