“THE MAGIC GLASS
A king heard that the citizens in one of his villages were fighting
among themselves. In one way or another, everyone was hurting his
neighbor. Wishing happiness for his people, the king sent a special
messenger to the village with a Magic Glass. Whoever would look through
the Magic Glass would see things as they were in reality, not according
to illusion or imagination. So such viewers always became good and
sensible and happy human beings. The special messenger left the Magic
Glass with the people, while knowing exactly what would happen, for he
had been on such trips before.
One group of villagers gave the glass a name and worshipped it just as
if it were a human being.
Others declared, ‘We already see things as they are, so what is the use
of this glass?’
A third group refused to even come close to the glass for fear it would
disturb their usual ways.
Other citizens stated, ‘The Magic Glass is fairly interesting, but we
can’t see how it can contribute to our daily needs in a practical
world.’
A few of the villagers changed themselves by actually looking through
the Magic Glass. But most of the people went on fighting and hurting
each other.”
