Isn’t Chrome Google, and therefore any variant of Chrome also Google? Would it be beyond belief to assume that the “privacy” versions of ANY browser (i.e. - Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge) or app (i.e. - WhatsApp) either has a back-door for, or is run by, the intelligence community?

I've read that Chrome is open source freeware, and that Google Chrome is Google's version of it, filled with their extensions, add-ons, and spyware. By contrast, Brave is a Chrome that's supposed to be better at privacy.

Granted, you're never 100% secure or private on the internet. But you improve your chances if you avoid Google Chrome or MS Edge.

Brave and Firefox (which is non-Chrome) are some of the better privacy browsers.

As for search engines, DuckDuckGo has gotten a lot of press as a good privacy alternative to Google or Bing, but I recently read that Qwant is even better.
