The great trading vessels of Roman times are known to have brought 100s of tons of cargo from India to Egypt. The manifest for one arrival by one ship (compiled by the tax man, probably) shows the largest single part of the cargo was over 600 tons of pepper. Achoo! This schooner Wyoming was totin' about 5000 tons of coal on its final voyage. For one more contrast, according to Gordon Lightfoot's song, the Edmund Fitzgerald was hauling 26,000 tons ('...more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty') when it sank.
