For serious work, avoiding the inkjets is a good idea. Modern scanners have the scan to network and scan to ftp thing going on as well. I no longer have a FAX (used a Canon laser with a real phone and keypad that did not require a computer, but could hook up to one), as the only thing I needed it for in 2006 was communications with subcontractors building my house, and one business contact who was old and was stuck there.
My scanner is also 12 years old, a cheap, little Fujitsu S300 sheet fed number that will not die.

I still find a need for a fax machine once in a while. Most recently had to fax some documents to a bank.
