I know John Jacob Astor (of Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC) died on the Titanic. He was last seen standing near the poop deck when one of the huge steam funnels came crashing down, so it was widely assumed he was crushed. He was one of the wealthiest men in the world at the time. Is Q insinuating he didn’t really die? But maybe went into hiding?
I did my high school senior term paper on the Titanic, so I read everything I could find about it long before that movie came out. I should watch it again to see who lived in the movie who died in reality.
I recently saw a documentary that claimed Capt. Smith was hired to sink Titanic for the insurance and that the “tradition” of the captain always going down with his ship is a fiction created (through repetition in print, film, etc.) to provide cover for Smith’s despicable decision.
He should have remained alive not only to lead his crew in the evacuation of the passengers but to give testimony to a board of inquiry.
Capt. Smith’s decision to go down with Titanic was strange as well as cowardly but if he did scuttle the greatest ship afloat with 1500 lives lost, it does make sense.
Astor was supposedly against the Federal Reserve. So he had to ‘go’.
Reuter's, however, has assured me that is incorrect. See:
