Know your Nautical terminology

way-lay
The verb's origin, from wegelage, means "lying in wait, with evil or hostile intent". So to be waylaid refers to a ship that has been taken off its course, route, or way by surprise, typically by unfortunate or nefarious means. In Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick, the great white whale waylaid the Pequod and sank it with only a few souls surviving in lifeboats.

Way-lay....

There’s a small railroad in northern Ohio called the Wheeling & Lake Erie, or W&LE.

My uncle, decades ago, used to refer to it as “Way-layed & Late Everywhere.

Interestingly, the W&LE still operates while several large railroads no longer exist.
