Then it behooves the citizens to rise up v. the university. It isn't a problem only there, all college towns to some extent put up with things they shouldn't. Time to make some noise.
The pluses of orientals (conflation w/Japanese, Taiwanese, Philippinos) is generally understood to have allowed the university to grow and provide administrative employment for ever increasing numbers of locals. The town is wealthier than most other towns in the state, even if it has endured more violence than most other cities in the state.
Otherwise, those “orientals” do sometimes flash their wealth in restaurants, with fine clothes, sometimes with large entourages or lavish dates, even though most are “mere students.” In-state students are generally not so well-to-do or ostentatious, though some are able, of course, as their parents are often forking over $40k+ year for their future doctors and lawyers.
Orientals in town are generally thought to be substandard at driving skills, getting into more than their share of fender benders.
If it becomes clearly understood that the CCP has waged war—biological, digital, electoral, economic, etc.—the tide could well turn against the University/local Chinese presence to the point of pressing for their removal from the university, but at the moment, only a small percentage of locals seem to think they need to pay any attention at all to their presence.
But yes, noise needs to be made.
I play tennis at the university’s tennis complex with three involved, older males, two Chinese professionals (one, a medical doctor) and a retired professor of immunology who has gone to China several times “on business.” (He’s proud of his new Tesla.) My making noise will probably not be welcome in our group if I do so on the basis of my lone, conspiracy theorist voice, cough, cough.
