I’m not mistaken Virginia law is a couple years of separation in age is not a big deal but if there’s like 20 years difference yeah that’s a problem for Virginia lawmakers.
When I graduated from high school in 73 it might hav been like that, but I only dated 30+ divorcee RNs...
I think the “couple years of separation in age is not a big deal” laws are fairly new. They make a huge amount of sense, so I’m surprised they were passed.

Known as the Romeo and Juliet Exclusion.
The exclusion keeps 18-19 year olds from being jailed for dating a 16-17 year old. The exclusion was intended for couples in a romantic relationship who had marriage in mind at the appropriate time/age.
It wasn’t meant for 30 year olds trolling for 15-16 year olds.
North Carolina has the R&J exclusion as well AND NC allows 17 year olds to marry without parental consent. For many years 17 year old girls who found themselves inappropriately with child, single and knocked up, would slip to NC with the baby’s daddy to get married. Everyone knew that a “Carolina marriage” was a shotgun wedding without the shotgun.
