I lived in Ottawa for 16 years and we lost about 3-5 snowmobilers every winter because they drove on ice that turned out to be too thin. It gets incredibly cold in Ottawa but the ice needs to be at least 6-8” thick before vehicles can drive on it safely.

While the Rideau River does not flow as swiftly as the Ottawa River, it’s still a river. The water currents keep running under the surface and it often looks more frozen than it is. She must be a newcomer because longtime residents know this and know not to drive on it or skate on it before certain dates. These dates are often advertised by the National Capital Commission. This woman is extremely foolish and lucky. SMH

What is this snow and ice stuff you speak of driving on?

Down here in Southeast Georgia, cold is for beer, ice is for tea, and snow is for snow cones.

It does get cold down here. In fact it is so cold tonight we have had to mostly close the windows.

my family rented a cabin frequently near Perth and I am sure we passed a Rideau lake up there somewhere....lovely area....my husband and I took a brief camping trip way up in the provincial park north of Ottawa....all I know is it was at least 17 miles of dirt road.
