How do you measure the cold on Mount Washington? 30ยบ below zero, or cold enough to freeze spaghetti in mid-air

Temperatures across New England dipped below zero Tuesday, but on Mount Washington in New Hampshire, a different, more anecdotal metric described the treacherous weather: the air was cold enough to freeze a dish of spaghetti, fork included, in mid-air.

Like a futuristic sculpture memorializing morning-after leftovers, the plate of pasta stood suspended in its place, its fork defying gravity as it hovered several inches off the snowy ground.

My father used to collect and help keep ice back in the day. They kept it covered in sawdust in the summer months I think I remember him saying. Ice a big deal back then. He also told how they used to also have to carry 5 gallon pails,of water to the one room school house (which is still standing, but recently got sold to a private owner I beleive, I hope,he preserves it),and how they would have to,do,this each morning before school started. Folks up the street from him got a TV, and the neighborhood, kids woild all gather in the home to watch their favorite shows

Times sure have changed

Very early, this morning, at first light, off the deck.....you could see that frozen spaghetti on the Summit [dead center].... especially, if you squint your eyes. :)

"Last summer, Travis Pastrana, set a new record of 5 minutes 28.67 seconds at the 2021 Mt. Washington Hillclimb in an 850 Horsepower Subaru built by Vermont Sports Car, in Milton, VT."

Available on Youtube and worth anyone's time. At 3:50, right after switching off the pavement onto the dirt & gravel, Pastrana briefly overcorrects out of a slight right-hand slide after taking a right corner, and it appears the left wheels contact the boulders off the left side of the road, literally just a foot away from dropping off into the void. Then seconds later, a bird hits the right corner windshield.

No, the squirrel on the plate.

Keeps it from eating all the bird suet.

I’ve done the “cup of boiling water into the air turns to snow” thing here in MN on more than one occasion.
