I’ve been trying to find Barilla’s pasta, Campanelle, for two years. I was told by the company that they had *temporarily* stopped making it so they could focus on a limited number of pasta shapes because of the shortage.

The way they probably work is they set up for one pasta shape, run a batch, set up for another shape, etc. Each setup involves downtime and overhead.

When you don't have the people and other resources to make all the shapes you used to, you pick the ones that are most popular and easy to make, and just do those.

And when part of the issue is lack of transportation, you pick those shapes which have the higher density, so you can maximize the number of boxes in a truck shipment.
