Of course there would be a few “bad apples”. But to imply it was widespread, or common was an insult. American soldiers, in general, do not behave that way.

I am not naïve at all, don’t twist things around, I’m not falling for it. There was nothing I said to suggest anything you are implying.

Hopefully, his age would have kept him out of the service. (The risk of a heart attack for an octogenarian would have been considered during his physical.)

Maybe not. Even snails need some down time.

The snail took a steamer across the Atlantic.

If he had no down time, the time saved on shipboard would have allowed him to make the delivery at about the same time as Neil Armstrong planted his boot on Tranquility Base.

40 hour week, half hour for lunch, two 15 minute breaks, annual 2 week vacation, the timing works ot about right...

That could work. It would of course take longer for the snail to craft and deploy a very small sailboat.

So “Captain” did you ever manage to re-float the SS Minnow?

My father was elated. He was in basic training in Mississippi, getting ready to do a land invasion of Japan - which would have caused massive casualties on both sides.

I mine was at Okinawa.

That’s way he hitched a ride on a steamer, he thought the leaden winter would bring him down forever. But but rode upon a steamer to the violence of the sun...

How fascinating, especially to me, who is a mailhandler, too.

On a more upbeat note, the late Mr. Gonsalves later had a very happy life, according to his obituary. Married for sixty-two years, he became the father of five good sons.

He now reposes in the love of God Almighty. God bless his sacred memory.
