Glenn Greenwald: GOP senators threatened to convict Trump if he pardoned Snowden, Assange
Substack ^ | Jan 8 | Glenn Greenwald

...

They were making very clear to him explicitly clear Republican senators like Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio and Mitch McConnell that if you do any of those things that you are considering doing, pardoning Assange and Snowden, declassifying JFK files, declassifying other secrets that should have been declassified long ago because they're from decades old treachery on the part of the US government, we will vote to impeach you. They had this leverage the sword of Damocles hanging over his head, and I am not saying this to justify Trump's cowardly refusal to do what he should have done in pardoning Edward Snowden, then Julian Assange. Candace Owens was right in that video that he should have and that if she were in his position, she would have. I'm just

I'm explaining what I know happened, which is that all signs are pointing in the direction of him pardoning Snowden, for sure. And maybe Assange. And then suddenly this preposterous impeachment proceeding to impeach a president who was on his way out anyway, emerged precisely because it gave them the leverage to threaten Trump and say that they would convict him if he did any of those things.

And that is why he left office without doing what you can tell from that video he knows he should have done. He's very sheepish, very uncharacteristically timid about explaining why he didn't. "Oh, I was just too nice. I was just too nice. I'm known for being too nice."

That wasn't the reason. The reason was, because he was afraid of those Republican threats to convict him.

Like I said before . Trump was essentially removed from office in a stealth 25th on the 6th. Military no longer under his command. The two divisions send into DC were not order there by him. Milley told commanders not to execute Trump orders without coming through him. Trumps communications were shut down (seize the radio station during a coup) Most of his cabinet resigned. He was told if he shut up he would be allowed to depart. Otherwise he would be removed by the end of the day and he and his kids would be arrested.

Our government was overthrown by Pence, Pelosi and McConnell.

He votes for amnesty and a permanent Democrat majority, why would you be surprised?

He’s as worthless as Grahamnesty.

“Trump’s cowardly refusal to do what he should have done in pardoning Edward Snowden, then Julian Assange.@
If he tried, they order would have simply been ignored, like his order to get out of Syria. DOJ would have simply ignored him. Supreme Court standing by to rule the pardons were unconstitutional for some newly discovered reason.

He was no longer in power and was essentially under house arrest those last few weeks. When you realize that, everything else makes sense.

"Mr. Trump could have easily pardoned these people on Jan. 7 or even on Jan. 18th"

Why do people keep saying this?

Hmmm. So Trump is supposed to issue a blanket pardon when only a handful of people were even arrested in that final week from Jan14 to Jan20?

Hmmm. Only one was charged with a felony before Jan20?

Hmmm. Most, at that time, cited for misdemeanors and released on promise-to-appear?

Hmmm. Why do you think the alphabets slow-pedaled that first arrest until one week before Jan 20?

Hmmm. Could it have had something to do with the fact that Trump's 2nd Impeachment was Jan13?

Nanzi. wanted. Trump. to. do. exactly. what. you. wanted. Trump. to. do., sign a blanket pardon during, or just after his 2nd Impeachment, so that the Senate Trial would remove Trump from office and bar any further run for the Presidency.

But you enjoy your fantasy Foam Boy scenario vs -- what was it? Castro Jr or something? -- in 2024. LOL. Not happening.

It was easier said than done.

You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than Washington DC, and Trump found that out the hard way.

On January 7 or 8th the US government was no longer following Trumps orders. Any orders of that nature would have been like Hitler giving orders to divisions that didn’t exist from the bunker with a day or two left... utterly ignored.

Thanks. It’s SWAG at best, but finding something better than SWAG on these sorts of things is a rare thing.

Last day of his presidency? They would have simply ignored his order... Supreme Court would have been ready to overrule it also.

I’ve thought that for a while now.

Couldn’t he still have swung the pardons? I agree that he was largely a lame duck, and issuing a pardon without some tacit agreement by those normally involved in drafting and promulgating would be awkward, but I think that he could have done so. That said, it may have been a “damn the torpedos” move for which he did not have the stomach—and which he judged to be too politically costly.

So tell me: What’s the worst that can come out of the JFK files?

The fact that Oswald was a patsy and our government killed JFK.

Trump gets ‘em elected so the GOP can flip them.

This is the one thing the GOP is good at. It knows how to use party funds and resources to convert and control people. They been doing it for a long time.

Ref the January 6 protesters, you don’t need to be arrested or charged in any way to receive a pardon. He didn’t do so because his orders were no liver being followed. Likewise had he ordered released the JFK files, think the CIA and National Archives would have obeyed? Of course not.

Republicans better comes with someone to primary Rubio because he doesn’t have a chance against a cuban democrat. My prediction.

Put a name on that bullshit prediction and I'll bet you $1,000 against him and for the fag marco {whom I hate}.

Your "prediction' ain't worth a bucket of warm spit, and you don't have the spine to bet a $1,000 and pick a name, {loser pays to FR not to the bet winner} to back up your 'loudmouth prediction'.

All you have to do is answer by saying YES, and the bet is on.

In fact, I'll bet the 'vig' $1,100 against your $1,000 that you disappear on this thread and never say 'yes'.

Wouldn’t have worked. If he tried if from his own desk even. DOJ would have run to the Supreme Court and they world have quickly discovered a new limit to the pardon power and overturned it. Also he would have been removed by the end of the day and his family arrested for a laundry list of crimes.

You said . . . "This guy knows nothing."

Glenn Greenwald knows nothing? HaHaHa. Glenn is on the opposite end of the political spectrum for me . . . but

Glenn is one of the last remaining journalist. His work on the Ukraine revolution and his work dissemminating Julian's data was unparalleled.

you say . . . "There was no impeachment pending then."

You are partially correct . . . However, something was in play. In a article dated January 12, 2021 was sending a signal to someone.

"In President Trump’s probable second impeachment, current Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has issued guidance that a trial, if needed, could still take place after the inauguration when Trump was no longer president."

Can President Trump be impeached after he leaves office?

Thinking Glenn is spot on in his reporting.

I guess I should have spelled it out for you. Instead of saying “these people” I should have said “Snowden and Assange”
No way was I referring to the patriots at the 1/6/210 protest.
