The father-son duo had spent years combing the Pennsylvania wilderness with to prospect for the long-rumored riches and had felt certain they'd found the haul when contacted by the bureau in March of that year.
The pair subsequently led agents to the mountainous, heavily wooded area they had honed in on in their sprawling search, and into an underground cave in Dent's Run, about 135 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
The bureau took over from there, barring the duo from taking part in the subsequent search.
Now, however, the two have since filed a federal lawsuit against the Justice Department over its failure to produce documents chronicling the FBI's search.

the simplest answer is gold is going to vanish if they found it.
there was an issue some years back - the fed would not allow germany to visually inspect the gold it supposedly had had in the fed vaults for decades, nor allow it to withdraw it.
simple answer? it had long since been sold.

I remember hearing about this back when they started digging and wondering how the Feds got involved. Tough guys with guns who legally don’t have to follow any rules.

^THIS^
NEVER ever verbally respond to them especially without a lawyer present even if it’s just a simple “Good morning”. Immediately plead the 5th and run, don’t walk, away.

Idiots that had no idea the Fed alphabet agencies didn't know what they were doing in the first place...
And anyone that thinks they are not following FR posters is just as naive...

Theze two are dumber than dumb. They should have just quietly found and spirited away the loot.

Escort them into the vault, let them even handle the gold bars, etc. - and then, when the Krauts are satisfied that everything is in bester Ordnung, escort them out again.
An hour later, when the Panamanian delegation arrives, lead them to the same stash of bars.
Rinse and repeat.
If it's a question of visually inspecting and verifying the serial numbers embossed on the bars, that would require a little quick melting and re-casting, but it would still be doable.

A pair of fools. Never, ever trust the government to do the right thing.
Well, at least the first part is correct. Treasure hunting is a mental illness. Finds like the Atoche and Great Western were just delayed salvage work.
They are now suing the Department of Justice (DOJ) in hopes of obtaining the bureau's official records detailing the hush-hush dig.
Like the 'official records' are going to be any different? This just solidifies who the fools are.

Never lead ANY government agency to ANY precious metals or other gainful cash.....I’ve seen it before...they will steal it outright.
